Children with ADHD are not always sensitive for rewards.

 Rewarding the ADHD child Minimize

Analyze
The teacher analyzes (if possible with the child), which behavoir is disturbing for herself/himself and for the other classmates. Then they decribe the wished for behavior in terms of concrete and perceptible behavior.

Work quietly means: clean your desk, hold up your finger when you want to ask something, etc.

Aiming for concrete behavior means that a child knows what is expected. The child will be rewarded when wished for behavior is visible and the teacher is not aimed on disturbing behavior.

Wished for behavior
The teacher stimulates the wished for behavior by adding positive amplifiers to the situation.

There are different amplifiers:

  • Social amplifiers: giving a complimen, thumbs up, etc.
  • Exhanging amplifiers: fiches, cards, etc. whick could be exchanged for something else
  • Activitity amplifiers: carry out nice activitities (drawing, playing games on the computer, etc.)
  • Material amplifiers: sticker, diploma, snacks, etc.

Guidelines for the choice of amplifier
Try to hold on to the above hierarchy. It is not right to start of with the material rewards when a student is sensitive for compliments. Students with ADHD are lacking the sensitiveness for social amplifiers. It is hard for ADHD children to see the relationship between their behavior and the impact. A reward for these children must be made explicitely and interesting, otherwise they would not notice. Also it has to be done in time right after acting on their behavior. Use a social amplifier next to a material one. Always adjust the choice to the individual child: age, level, interests, problemacy. Whether an amplifier is working depends partly from the one who gives it. The relationship between the teacher and the student plays a huge part in this.

Amplifier menu
Especially with less motivated children an amplifier menu works stimulating. The student will choose for himself/herself the different rewards. Familiarisation will be less the case.

Contract of appointment card
You can use a contract or appointment card. In this a teacher and a student can describe what the wished for and problematic behavior is about and how to the wished for behavior could occur more often. As well as the consequences as well the rewards are described.
