Example problem solving strategy This strategy must be followed by the child whenever he/she approaches this kind of problem. You can use the self instruction method which is developed by Meichenbaum. The child learns to control his/her own task behavior. With this approach the child can influence his/her impulsiveness. The problem analysis phase is very important. ADHD children often start impulsively with their tasks, without understanding what to do, what the task is about and what the problem is like. Soon it will become clear they do not understand it. The teacher hears their 'cry for help' or sees there are too many mistakes in their task. Self instruction method Self instruction training involves learning tasks. Together with the student the teacher walks through some steps of the execution of the task. These steps are visualized by means of 'the method of the four bears'. Visualizing the steps will give the student grip to the execution of the task. Eventually it is neccesary fo the student to define the steps him/her self, before starting the task. Many children with ADHD will need the visual support! Example self instruction method
Feedback Give direct feedback as soon as possible to the delivered performances. This means: check the work as soon as possible, preferrably when he/she has finished it. Tutor the child to check the task herself/himself (very fasy feedback). Computer Children with ADHD act good when they execute their tasks on a computer. Probably this is because of the quick feedback (something is good or false). Another reason could be the interesting format these tasks offer to the student. Task perception Give attention to the task perception of the child. Send positive internal attributes. No impulses in the classroom Take out the impulses which are entered from the environment during the execturion of the task. Give the student a non impulsive place in the classroom. |
